Mediterranean cuisine

This emblematic restaurant on the Pg. De Gràcia has something for everybody—from the finicky to the outdoor dining types. Traditional Mediterranean and Italian dishes like risottos and fresh pasta to pizzas and paellas are a no-fail plan, especially when enjoyed on the generous outdoor terrace.

Fishy architecture

Chef Jun Feng serves creative Japanese cuisine in an intimate space designed by Mario Fiscina. With furniture from Eames and Arne Jacobsen and moody lighting, it’s all a bit Wong Kar-Wai, but the food is pure Japanese--delicate, buttery sushi melts in your mouth. Uniformed waiters add formality.

Tapas galore

We’re crazy about the tasty morsels this “basement of tapas” whips up: fried eggs, patatas bravas, fresh cockles, duck foie gras with spiced bread—all freshly prepared. Add more than 100 wines and homemade desserts, and we’re smitten. Prix fixe lunches? It’s almost too much for us to handle—almost.

Dining from the sea, by the sea

Located underneath Frank Gehry’s rooftop fish sculpture, Bestial prepares light, flavorful Mediterranean fare made from genuine Italian ingredients. A minimalist terrace-garden, often rocking with live music and art exhibitions, provides the perfect company: sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Respect your elders

Since 1836, marble floors, endless mirrors and great Catalan food like herring with onions and potatoes and numerous paella amount to a stellar dining experience housed in a national monument—the Pòrtics d’en Xifré, the first place in Barcelona to install running water. Business classy.

Famed tapas and enough cava for a river

Located in the heart of Poble Sec, this eatery has carved out a reputation for being one of the best places for cold tapas in Barcelona. While the “smoked tray” is an absolute joy, perhaps more delightful is the snug, friendly atmosphere with the cluttered shelving impressively stacked to capacity.

Animated entertainment

Encounter the marriage of fair prices and quality cooking plugged in the trendiest area of the Raval. Young Argentine chef Sebastian Mazzola surprises with gastronomic tricks he’s learned at El Bulli, while a bohemian interior rotates work from local artists, sparking conversation—and more wine.

Organic woks to go

Healthy fast food may sound like an oxymoron, but that’s exactly how this beachfront establishment lures boardwalk stragglers. Stir-frys are made to order—pick noodles, rice, meat, vegetables—or just browse the racks, as Wokimarket is also a supermarket of Latin American, Asian and organic produce.

Our daily bread

Stone-ground flour, chlorine-free water, unrefined Atlantic sea salt and sourdough are just some of the organic ingredients used to sift, knead, and bake—for some 15 hours—the perfect old-style loaf that can hold up for days. With natural and inventive ingredients, this Raval bakery is a must.

Saigon via New Orleans via Barcelona

Me does its name justice by carving out a rock-solid identity. Chef Thang Pham gives a culinary tour from Saigon to New Orleans to Barcelona, and the tapas reflect these wildly disparate tastes: sweet grilled calamari, a whole sole fish, tofu drizzled in hot soy sauce. Sounds strange, but it works.
